Tips to draw people to your website

Search engine optimization is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" search results for targeted keywords. It is an art that can take years to master, but there are a couple of tips that can help any non-profit get the best possible ranking from the most popular search engine.

google

According to a 2007 study performed by Nielsen/NetRatings, Google is the most used

search engine on the web with a 54% market share, ahead of Yahoo! (20%) and Live Search (13%).

If you are not seeing your site when placing keywords in popular search engines like Google, it could be the result of a number of problems.

1. Take advantage of Google for Non-profits.  At no cost, you can utilize webmaster tools to enhance your site and find best practices. Click here to check out tools such as Gooogle Grants which offers free advertising to select non-profits.  When Google users search on keywords related to your organization, your ad appears next to relevant Google search results under the Sponsored Links section. (a Google account must be created to access these tools)

New Executive Director

The United Way of Paducah-McCracken County recently announced that Ashley Small will serve as the organization's new Executive Director.

Ashley, a Paducah native, is currently the Program Director of Caring for Kids, Inc., a non-profit in St. Louis, dedicated to providing essential resources to meet the needs of children in the Family Court system in the St. Louis area. She previously served as Associate Executive Director and Interim Executive Director for Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center in Paducah.

In May, Ashley will be awarded a master's degree in social work with a specialization in non-profit management from Washington University in St. Louis. She earned her undergraduate degree in 2002 from Berea College.

Ashley fills a vacancy created in September when Executive Director June Antony left after a successful career spanning more than 20 years.

"As we move forward with the community impact initiatives and further develop programs like 2-1-1 and Success by Six, we are confident that Ms. Small has the skills to lead that charge and look forward to introducing her to our supporters in the weeks ahead," said Dr. Riley Love, Board President."

Ashley will begin her term as Executive Director on May 1.
